Site overload issues.

As many users have noticed, RPoL has been having some issues responding to all the requests its receiving at peak usage times.  This is generally late afternoon and into the evening in eastern North America (GMT -5).

This problem most commonly manifests as time-out (e.g., "server not found") errors when trying to view RPoL pages, or as the partial loading of a page with a mySQL error response:
Warning: mysql_connect(): Lost connection to MySQL server during query in /data/rpol/webdocs/lib/rubb.php on line 29
Could not connect: Lost connection to MySQL server during query.

This is a known issue caused by too heavy a load on our server.  It's being worked on, as noted by jase earlier today.
Over in the General forums, jase:
The server is under too much load, getting nearly 1 million hits a day.  Please be patient while we organise new hardware for the site.

We'll update this thread should we get any new information.

Update, 10 April 2008

Just an update on this:

On 10 April, jase:
I'm still trying to proceed with Tranxact Global for the new dedicated server offering, namely their Enterptise Lite server, or possibly even a Quad core special that's on at the moment (USD $149/month).  I've had some problems getting the order processed but I'm persevering because they have a good reputation in the industry and I believe that's worth pursuing, their network speed is very good, and I know I'm being a bit fiddly with the server configuration so it's not just all them.

I know the current connectivity issues are a pain but I'm focusing on getting the right solution, not just a solution.

Update, 19 April 2008

Our new server has been ordered and the first payment made to Tranxact Global/NetDepot.

Our new server will consist of the following;
  • Single QUAD Core 2.4GHz CPU
(up from a single core CPU)
  • 2GB of Memory
    (up from 1GB)
  • Dual 250GB SATA drives, mirrored for redundancy
(up from a single 80GB IDE)
  • 2000GB of GNAX (Global Net Access) Gold Bandwidth
(I have tested their network and it seems very quick)

We are now waiting on our server to be commissioned so we can configure it for RPoL and then go about migrating the site.  More information will be posted as it becomes available.

If you wish to discuss any part of this message then this post will also be posted in the public thread here; link to a message in "General RPoL".

Edit:  A very late addition, but should probably be added in here... we moved to our new server at approximately 04:30 on Saturday 7th June 2008 GMT.
